Thanks to the Fairfield Iowa Flickr Group, I was introduced to Guy Harvey’s photography. He’s been busy lately taking shots of Fairfield Iowa and has compiled a great set of photographs titled “Fairfield Iowa Scenes”. You have likely seen Guy out around town in the sunset hours with his Pentax. I love his eye for capturing “urban” Fairfield, as well as his creative shots using long exposure times. Here’s what he has to say about “Fairfield Iowa Scenes”:
One of the things that keeps my photography motivated is to shoot themes. Urban Fairfield is one of them. I started shooting down town Fairfield in 2008 and has intensified since moving a couple of blocks form down town. I find there are so many interesting details in the buildings and so many contrasts from the Golden Dome, to Depot Street around the rail tracks, to brightly painted thriving businesses to the old and decaying. I am a color shooter, so I look for color as well as pattern and shape. I hope the images give people a deeper appreciation for this amazing small town and the diversity of the people here.
Interested in networking with other local photographers and sharing your work? You can join Guy and other local photographers on the Fairfield Iowa Flickr Group. Flickr is a free online service for sharing photos and videos, and anyone can join the Fairfield Group. Despite it’s small size, Fairfield Iowa has a very active Flickr group featuring a variety of talents and perspective.
Given the title you’d think I’d go off on a matrimonial advice tangent, but I’ve (sort of) learned to be more sensible about that sort of thing after being married for as long as I have.
Getting to the point. I’ve recently been embroiled in a case of misunderstanding, misplaced trust and general misgivings all round related to wedding photography. I should probably step back and provide context so we get beyond the “whachu talkin ’bout willis” phase of the conversation.
Two very close friends of mine recently wedded each other (yeah, I word-smithed that to hell and it still sounds obscene). They only had friends at the wedding and I was asked to play the role of the minister (thank Krishna for the Internet!). Another friend volunteered to play the role of the photographer and yet another the videographer. My pals wanted just close friends and there it was.
It’s now a few weeks later, and the missing ingredient in matrimonial bliss is a rather pronounced lack of the original photographs.
It’s the beginning of June and despite a rocky start, our backyard garden is starting to make encouraging progress. We started our garden last summer by digging up a 15 x 40 area of grass in the backyard. This year we expanded the garden by about 100 sq ft (taking over more lawn) and added raspberry, blackberry and blueberry bushes, as well as two apple trees.
The Fairfield Flickr group is looking for local photographers to become members. It’s a great way to meet fellow photographers, pro and amateur, in town. The group is planning a bbq this summer for group members to get together and share photography tips, tricks and stories.
To join go to the Fairfield Flickr Group’s home page. You will need a Yahoo! account (both free). Once you join you will be able to upload your photos and participate in discussions with other group members. All ages welcome.
