I’ve been hearing about it for a while, that there’s this amazing Sunday brunch at Top of the Rock. My friend and local musician Sharon Bousquet has provided live music for it on several occasions and each time I somehow have either had something else going on or I missed the window of time where she was playing. Last Sunday was her last time to play there for a while so I really tried to make it but I was foiled by circumstances once again, showing up at 1:30 when she had stopped playing at 1pm. I was hungry though and the brunch menu was available till 2pm so I decided to try it anyway.
I ordered the Eggs Benedict and they were super tasty! I should probably mention two things here, one, I’ve never had Eggs Benedict before, so really, I don’t have anything to compare my experience with, but two, for some reason I became obsessed with the idea of Eggs Benedict a few months back. I spent a morning watching many a YouTube video on how to prepare poached eggs. I tried several times using the techniques I saw online but never really felt I got the hang of it. Anyway, there were many other tasty looking things on the menu but this little curiosity fueled obsession ruled my decision when it came time to order.

Pretty & tasty. Eggs Benedict at Top of the Rock
If you are like me and hadn’t heard of Eggs Benedict before, the dish consists of poached eggs on English muffins, smothered in hollandaise sauce. It also generally includes bacon but as a vegetarian (lacto ovo), I opted to skip the bacon and go for asparagus, which I thought provided a fresh, crisp contrast in flavor and texture to the rich, creamy portion. With the combination of the moist eggs and the thick sauce I almost thought there was some sort of cheese involved because something reminded me of a creamy cheese sauce a bit, but not quite. One thing that did kind of surprise me as someone who is generally new to eggs is that the yokes of the poached eggs were still runny. When I cut them open I mostly just let the yoke drain out on the plate, but I am sure plenty of other people like that part.
All in all it was a very pleasant meal for me, filling to the stomach and fascinating to the tongue.
When I told one of my friends I’d been to the brunch she raved about a couple other items on the menu, so now I know I’ll have to go back some other Sunday to try some other things too!
